First edition of Sundance Film Festival

1978

The Sundance Film Festival began in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1978, under the name Utah/US Film Festival, and was intended to encourage filmmaking in the state and to show independent American films. The actor and director Robert Redford, whose Sundance Institute was set up in 1981 to support independent filmmakers, became closely associated with it and took over its management. The festival moved to Park City in the 1980s and grew into the most important showcase of independent cinema in the United States. Films that gained attention there include Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Reservoir Dogs and Little Miss Sunshine. It is held every January.
