Founding of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon

1978

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, is a peacekeeping force established by the Security Council after Israel invaded southern Lebanon in response to a Palestinian attack. Its original mandate was to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces, to restore international peace and security, and to help the Lebanese government to regain authority in the area. Israel withdrew in 1978, but occupied a strip of the south until 2000, and UNIFIL was not able to fulfill its task fully. After the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, its numbers and mandate were greatly expanded. It has its headquarters in Naqoura, and has been deployed with thousands of troops from many countries. In 2025 the Security Council decided to wind it down.
