Establishment of Virunga National Park

1925

Virunga National Park in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was created as Albert National Park by the Belgian authorities, making it the first national park in Africa. It was set up to protect the mountain gorilla and the remarkable landscapes of the Virunga volcanoes, which include the active Nyiragongo with its lava lake. The park also contains savannah, forest and lakes, and is rich in wildlife. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it has long suffered from poaching, armed groups and pressure from settlement and oil exploration, and many of its rangers have been killed defending it.
