Establishment of Mount Olympus

1938

Mount Olympus, on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia in northern Greece, is the country's highest mountain, rising to just under three thousand metres at the summit called Mytikas. In Greek mythology it was the home of the twelve major gods, led by Zeus. In 1938 the mountain and its surroundings became Greece's first national park, protecting its rich flora, which includes many endemic plants, and its forests, gorges and wildlife. It was designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in the early 1980s. Mytikas was first climbed in 1913, and the mountain is now a popular destination for hikers and climbers.
