2018 North Korea–United States Singapore Summit

12 June 2018

The Singapore Summit was the first meeting between a sitting president of the United States, Donald Trump, and a leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un. It was held at a hotel on Sentosa Island and followed months of tension, then a sudden diplomatic opening after North Korea took part in the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The two men signed a short joint statement in which the United States committed to security guarantees and North Korea reaffirmed its commitment to work toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The document was vague on how and when this would happen, and critics noted that it lacked verification measures. A second summit in Hanoi in 2019 ended without agreement, and the talks stalled.
