InSight was a NASA robotic lander designed to study the deep interior of Mars rather than its surface. Launched from California in May 2018, it landed on a flat plain called Elysium Planitia in November of that year. Its seismometer recorded hundreds of marsquakes and meteorite impacts, which let scientists estimate the thickness of the crust and the size of the planet's liquid core. A heat probe meant to burrow into the ground, called the mole, failed to dig in. By late 2022 dust on its solar panels had reduced its power so much that NASA declared the mission over.
