Extinction Rebellion is an environmental movement that began in the United Kingdom in 2018 and uses nonviolent civil disobedience to press governments to act against climate change and biodiversity loss. Its founders included Gail Bradbrook, Roger Hallam and Simon Bramwell, and it set out three demands: that governments tell the truth about the climate emergency, act to reach net-zero emissions by a short deadline, and set up citizens' assemblies. The group became known for mass blockades and protests, such as the occupation of central London bridges and streets in April 2019. Thousands of its supporters were arrested, and its tactics were criticised by some as disruptive. It inspired groups in many countries.
