Construction of Crimean Bridge

15 May 2018

The Crimean Bridge, also known as the Kerch Strait Bridge, links the Russian mainland, Krasnodar Krai, with the Crimean peninsula across the Kerch Strait. It was built after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, which most countries, including Ukraine, regard as illegal. The road bridge was opened by President Vladimir Putin in May 2018 and a parallel railway bridge followed in 2019. At about 19 kilometers it is the longest bridge in Europe. The bridge is important for supplying Crimea and for Russian military logistics, and it was damaged by a truck explosion in October 2022 and by later attacks, which Ukraine has been held responsible for.
