The Cuban Revolution was the armed uprising that overthrew the dictator Fulgencio Batista and brought Fidel Castro to power. It is usually dated from 26 July 1953, when Castro led an unsuccessful attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba, to the rebel victory on 1 January 1959. After being imprisoned and exiled, Castro returned in 1956 with a small force, among them his brother Raul and the Argentine physician Che Guevara, and waged a guerrilla war in the Sierra Maestra. Batista fled the country at the start of 1959. The new government nationalized land and industry, allied itself with the Soviet Union, and became the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere, which led to confrontation with the United States.
