Aretha Franklin died on 16 August 2018 in Detroit, aged 76. An American singer, songwriter and pianist, Franklin was known as the Queen of Soul. Raised in Detroit and trained in gospel music in her father's church, she turned to secular music and, after joining Atlantic Records in 1967, recorded hits such as Respect, Chain of Fools and Think. Her powerful voice and emotional phrasing made her an icon of the civil rights era and of women's empowerment. She won eighteen Grammy Awards and was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She performed at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
