2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum

23 June 2016

The United Kingdom held a referendum on its membership of the European Union on 23 June 2016, called by Prime Minister David Cameron as part of a pledge to settle a long-running debate in his Conservative Party. The campaign dealt with issues such as immigration, sovereignty and the economy, with the Leave side led by figures such as Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage and the Remain side supported by the government. Turnout was about 72 percent and Leave won with roughly 52 percent of the vote, though Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay. Cameron resigned, and after years of negotiations under Theresa May and Johnson the country left the EU on 31 January 2020. The result is known as Brexit and has had lasting effects on British politics and trade.
