Release of Pokémon Go

6 July 2016

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic in cooperation with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Players use the GPS of their smartphones to find and catch virtual Pokémon that appear in real-world locations, and they visit landmarks called PokéStops and gyms. It was based on Niantic's earlier game Ingress. The game became a worldwide phenomenon in the summer of 2016, with hundreds of millions of downloads in a short time, and people gathered in parks and public squares to play. It also raised concerns about trespassing and accidents caused by distracted players. Later updates added raids, trading and other social features, and the game kept a large audience over the following years.
