2016 Nice attack

14 July 2016

On Bastille Day, a man drove a heavy lorry along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, ploughing into crowds who had gathered to watch the fireworks. The attacker, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, a Tunisian resident of France, drove for about two kilometres before police shot him dead. Eighty-six people were killed, many of them children and tourists, and hundreds were injured. The Islamic State claimed responsibility. The attack came eight months after the Paris attacks of November 2015 and led France to extend its state of emergency, as well as raising a political debate about security.
