Construction of Gotthard Base Tunnel

1 June 2016

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel through the Swiss Alps, which at 57 kilometers is the longest railway tunnel in the world. It runs under the Gotthard massif between Erstfeld in the canton of Uri and Bodio in Ticino, and it was built as part of the AlpTransit project to move freight from road to rail and to shorten travel times between northern and southern Europe. Construction took about seventeen years, using tunnel boring machines, and was approved by Swiss voters in referendums. The tunnel was officially opened in June 2016 and began regular service in December of that year. It runs at a nearly flat grade and allows fast passenger trains, cutting the trip between Zurich and Milan.
