Orlando nightclub shooting

12 June 2016

The Orlando nightclub shooting was a mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, which was holding a Latin night in the early hours of 12 June 2016. A gunman, Omar Mateen, opened fire inside the club and killed 49 people and wounded dozens more before he was killed by police after a standoff of several hours. During the attack he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in calls to emergency services, though investigators did not find that the group had directed it. It was the deadliest attack on LGBT people in the United States and, at that time, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. The event prompted mourning across the country and renewed debates about gun laws.
