2006 Lebanon War

from 12 July 2006 to 14 August 2006

The 2006 Lebanon War began on 12 July 2006, when Hezbollah fighters crossed from Lebanon into Israel, killed several Israeli soldiers and captured two others. Israel responded with air strikes and a naval blockade and, later, a ground invasion of southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah fired thousands of rockets into northern Israel. The fighting killed more than a thousand people in Lebanon, most of them civilians, and dozens of Israeli civilians and many soldiers, and caused extensive destruction of infrastructure in Lebanon. The war ended in August with a ceasefire under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which called for the deployment of the Lebanese army and an expanded UN force in the south. Both sides claimed victory, and the confrontation remained unresolved.
