Creation of Rust

23 July 2006

Rust is a programming language designed for performance and memory safety. It began in 2006 as a personal project of Graydon Hoare, a Mozilla employee, and Mozilla began to sponsor it officially in 2009. Its distinctive feature is a system of ownership and borrowing that lets the compiler prevent many memory errors and data races without a garbage collector. The first stable version, Rust 1.0, appeared in May 2015, and the language is now developed by an open community, with the Rust Foundation formed in 2021. It is used for systems software, browsers, web services and command-line tools, and it has been accepted as a language for writing parts of the Linux kernel.
