Creation of Xubuntu

23 June 2006

Xubuntu is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that uses the Xfce desktop environment, which is lightweight and fast, making it suitable for older or less powerful computers while still providing a complete desktop. The name combines Xfce and Ubuntu. It became an official Ubuntu flavor with release 6.06, nicknamed Dapper Drake, and follows the same schedule as Ubuntu itself, with new versions every six months and long-term support versions every two years. It uses the same software repositories as Ubuntu, so users have access to the same large collection of free programs. Other official flavors include Kubuntu, which uses KDE, and Lubuntu, which uses a lightweight desktop environment as well.
