Discovery of OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb

10 August 2006

OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb is an exoplanet located toward the centre of the Milky Way, some 20,000 light-years away, found by the gravitational microlensing method. The technique relies on a star passing in front of a more distant one, bending and magnifying the background starlight, and a planet around the foreground star leaves a short extra spike in the brightness. The discovery involved the OGLE, MOA and PLANET collaborations. The planet has a mass of only a few times that of Earth and orbits a faint red dwarf at a distance where it would be extremely cold. It was among the least massive planets known when it was announced, showing that cold, rocky or icy worlds may be common.
