Construction of Emirates Stadium

22 July 2006

The Emirates Stadium in the Holloway area of Islington, north London, is the home of Arsenal Football Club. It opened in July 2006, with the first match a testimonial for the club's former striker Dennis Bergkamp, and replaced Highbury, where Arsenal had played for ninety-three years. It was designed by the stadium architects HOK Sport, now known as Populous, and holds about sixty thousand spectators, making it one of the largest club grounds in England. The airline Emirates paid for the naming rights as part of a sponsorship deal. The old Highbury stadium was turned into apartments, and the club's move meant a much larger capacity and greater revenue, although it also meant years of financial restraint.
