The Syrian Civil War grew out of the 2011 protests against President Bashar al-Assad, which began in Daraa and were met with violent repression. The unrest escalated into an armed conflict in which many factions fought, including rebel groups, Kurdish-led forces and jihadists such as the Islamic State. Russia, Iran and Hezbollah backed the government, while Turkey, Gulf states and the United States supported various opposition groups. The war caused hundreds of thousands of deaths, displaced millions of people and created one of the largest refugee crises in modern times, with chemical weapons used in several attacks. It ended when an opposition offensive toppled Assad, who fled to Russia.
