Release of Google Translate

28 April 2006

Google Translate is a free online translation service launched by Google in April 2006. Early versions relied on existing translation software licensed from other companies, but in 2007 Google began using its own statistical machine translation system, which learned from large collections of texts already translated by humans, such as documents of the United Nations and the European Union. The service gradually added more languages, as well as speech, camera and offline modes. In 2016 Google began switching to a neural machine translation system, which improved fluency considerably. It supports well over a hundred languages, although quality varies, and it is typically weaker for languages with limited written resources.
