Release of Grand Theft Auto III

23 October 2001

Grand Theft Auto III is an action-adventure video game developed by DMA Design, later Rockstar North, and published by Rockstar Games, first released on the PlayStation 2. It moved the series from a top-down view to a fully three-dimensional city, Liberty City, in which the player could roam freely, drive vehicles, take missions and engage in crime. Its open-world design, combined with a cinematic story and a soundtrack of radio stations, was highly influential and a commercial success, and it became one of the best-selling games of its generation. It also stirred controversy over violence and led to debates on the content of video games. It was followed by Vice City and San Andreas.
