Virginia Tech shooting

16 April 2007

The Virginia Tech shooting was a mass shooting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, carried out by a student, Seung-Hui Cho, who first killed two people in a residence hall and, over two hours later, shot many others in Norris Hall before killing himself. Thirty-two people were killed in all, apart from the gunman, making it at the time the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in modern US history. Cho had a documented history of mental health problems that had not been properly acted on. The university's delay in warning students attracted criticism, and a state panel reviewed the response. The case led to changes in campus emergency alert systems and in US rules on reporting mental health records.
