Construction of Wembley Stadium

9 March 2007

Wembley Stadium in north-west London is the national football stadium of England, and it replaced an earlier stadium of the same name that opened in 1923 and was demolished in 2003. The new building was designed by Foster and Partners with the stadium architects HOK, and its most recognisable feature is a huge steel arch that rises above the roof and can be seen across London. Construction was delayed, and the stadium was handed over in March 2007, with the first major event being the FA Cup final in May that year. It holds about ninety thousand spectators and is the home of the England team, and it hosts the FA Cup final, the Football League play-offs, rugby and concerts, as well as European finals.
