Discovery of Gliese 581d

24 April 2007

Gliese 581d is a planet candidate reported to orbit the red dwarf star Gliese 581, about twenty light-years from the Sun in the constellation Libra. It was found by a European team using the radial velocity method with the HARPS spectrograph in Chile, and for some time it was regarded as one of the most promising candidates for a habitable world, since it might lie near the outer edge of the star's habitable zone. Later studies questioned whether the signal came from a planet or from stellar activity, and the planet's existence is disputed. The Gliese 581 system has had a complex history of claimed and refuted planets.
