Gliese 581 c is an exoplanet orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581, about twenty light-years from Earth in the constellation Libra. It was announced in April 2007 by a team of European astronomers led by Stephane Udry, who found it by measuring tiny variations in the star's motion with the HARPS spectrograph at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. The planet has a minimum mass about five times that of Earth and circles its star in about thirteen days. It was at first described as lying in the habitable zone, which raised hopes of liquid water, but later models suggested that it is probably too hot, with conditions similar to those on Venus. It remains one of the early examples of a small planet found around another star.
