The 2007 French presidential election was held in two rounds, with the first on 22 April and a runoff two weeks later between the centre-right candidate Nicolas Sarkozy of the Union for a Popular Movement and the Socialist Ségolène Royal, the first woman to reach the second round in France. Turnout was very high. Sarkozy, a former interior minister, campaigned on work, security and breaking with the past, and won the runoff with a little more than half of the votes. He succeeded Jacques Chirac, who had served for twelve years. Royal had been the Socialist Party's candidate after an internal contest, and the centrist François Bayrou finished third in the first round.
