Somali Civil War

26 January 1991

The Somali Civil War is a long conflict that began in the 1980s as an uprising against the military regime of Siad Barre and became much worse after he fled Mogadishu in early 1991. The central government collapsed, and power passed to clan-based militias and warlords, while the north declared the independent Somaliland. A United Nations and United States intervention in the early 1990s ended in withdrawal after the battle of Mogadishu in 1993. Later years saw the Islamic Courts Union, the rise of the militant group al-Shabaab and the creation of internationally backed transitional and federal governments. Famine, displacement and insecurity have persisted in parts of the country.
