Founding of Central European University

1991

Central European University is a private graduate university in the social sciences and humanities, founded by the Hungarian-American financier George Soros after the fall of communism, with the aim of supporting open societies in the postcommunist region. It was chartered in the United States and began teaching in Budapest, with a campus also in Prague for a short period. In 2017 the Hungarian government of Viktor Orban passed legislation that made it difficult for the university to continue operating in Hungary, which was widely seen as a political attack, and the European Court of Justice later ruled the law was against EU law. The university moved most of its operations to Vienna in 2019, while continuing some activity in Budapest.
