Founding of Visegrád Group

15 February 1991

The Visegrád Group was formed on 15 February 1991, when the leaders of Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland met in the Hungarian town of Visegrád, where medieval kings of the three kingdoms had met in 1335. Its aim was to coordinate the three countries' transition from communism to democracy and a market economy, and to support their integration into NATO and the European Union. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993 the group was continued by the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and the four countries joined the EU in 2004. The group later became known as a bloc that often took common positions in European debates, especially on migration policy. Its cooperation is informal, without a permanent secretariat, though it supports an International Visegrad Fund.
