Founding of Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization

11 February 1991

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization, or UNPO, is an international organisation that gives a voice to peoples and groups who are not represented in bodies such as the United Nations. It was founded at The Hague in the Netherlands in early 1991, as a successor to earlier efforts, by indigenous peoples, minorities and occupied nations. Its members have included Tibetans, Crimean Tatars, Kurds, Aboriginal Australians, Taiwanese and the peoples of Western Sahara, among others, and several of its early members later gained independence. Membership requires a commitment to nonviolence, democracy and human rights. The organisation offers advocacy, training and a platform for its members at international meetings.
