Creation of Python

20 February 1991

Python is a general-purpose programming language created by the Dutch programmer Guido van Rossum, who began work on it in the late 1980s at the CWI research institute in the Netherlands. Its first public release, version 0.9.0, was published in February 1991. It was designed as a successor to the language ABC, with an emphasis on readable code, and it borrowed its name from the British comedy group Monty Python. Python 2.0 appeared in 2000 and the incompatible Python 3 in 2008. Its clear syntax and large collection of libraries have made it popular in education, web development, scientific computing, data analysis and artificial intelligence, and it is now among the most widely used languages.
