Establishment of Rwenzori Mountains National Park

1991

Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects part of the Rwenzori range on Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a mountain chain often identified with the Mountains of the Moon described by the ancient Greeks. Unlike most other African mountains, it is not volcanic, but a block raised by faulting, and it has a series of peaks covered with snow and glaciers near the equator, as well as unique plants such as giant heathers, lobelias and groundsels. The glaciers have been shrinking considerably in recent decades due to climate change. The park is a popular destination for trekkers and climbers, and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 for its natural beauty.
