The Second Polish Republic was the Polish state that existed between the two world wars, after Poland regained its independence in the closing stage of the First World War, following more than a century of partition between Russia, Prussia and Austria. Its borders were fixed after several conflicts, including the Polish–Soviet War, and it had large minorities of Ukrainians, Jews, Belarusians and Germans. Józef Piłsudski dominated the country's politics, particularly after the coup of 1926. The republic had a fast-growing economy in some regions but was also marked by poverty and ethnic tensions. It was invaded by Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939, and although its government continued in exile, the state ceased to exist in practice.
