The Estonian War of Independence was fought between Estonia, which had declared independence in February 1918, and Soviet Russia, whose Red Army invaded in November 1918 after the German withdrawal. The Estonian army under General Johan Laidoner, helped by Finnish and Danish volunteers, a British naval squadron and anti-Bolshevik Russian forces, pushed the Soviet troops back. In 1919 Estonian and Latvian forces also defeated the Baltic German Landeswehr at the Battle of Cesis. The Treaty of Tartu recognized Estonia's independence, with Soviet Russia renouncing all claims to its territory. Estonia kept its independence until the Soviet occupation of 1940.
