Italian Social Republic

from 23 September 1943 to 25 April 1945

The Italian Social Republic, often called the Republic of Salò after the town on Lake Garda where some of its ministries were based, was a puppet state set up by Nazi Germany in German-occupied northern Italy. It was led by Benito Mussolini, who had been removed from power and arrested, then freed by German paratroopers in a daring raid on the Gran Sasso, shortly after Italy signed an armistice with the Allies. The state had its own army and a fascist party, but it depended entirely on German support, and it was bitterly opposed by the Italian resistance, which led to a brutal civil war. It collapsed in the last days of the war in Europe, and Mussolini was captured and executed by partisans.
