Founding of Saudi Arabia

23 September 1932

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was proclaimed when Abdulaziz ibn Saud, known in the West as Ibn Saud, united his realms of Hejaz and Nejd under a single name. He had spent three decades rebuilding the power of the House of Saud, beginning with the capture of Riyadh in 1902 and followed by the conquest of Mecca and Medina in the mid-1920s. The new state was a monarchy resting on the Al Saud family and on its long alliance with Wahhabi religious scholars. Oil was found in commercial quantities near Dhahran in 1938, transforming a poor desert kingdom into one of the richest states in the world. Ibn Saud ruled until his death in 1953, and the throne has since passed from one of his sons to another.
