On 4 November 1922, Howard Carter's workmen in the Valley of the Kings uncovered a step cut in the rock, the beginning of the sealed tomb of Tutankhamun, the young pharaoh who died about 1323 BC. Carter, funded by Lord Carnarvon, had been searching for six years. On 26 November he peered through a hole in the doorway and, asked if he could see anything, answered 'Yes, wonderful things'. The burial chamber was opened in February 1923, revealing the intact royal burial with a solid gold mask, a gilded shrine and more than 5,000 objects. It started a worldwide craze for Egypt.
