Rwandan Civil War

from 1 October 1990 to 4 August 1993

The Rwandan Civil War began in October 1990, when the Rwandan Patriotic Front, a rebel group formed largely by Tutsi refugees who had fled earlier violence, invaded from Uganda to challenge the government of President Juvénal Habyarimana, which was dominated by Hutu leaders. The conflict brought international mediation and the Arusha Accords of August 1993, which planned power sharing and a United Nations force. Hardliners opposed the agreement. After the president's plane was shot down on 6 April 1994, the genocide against the Tutsi began, and the Front resumed its offensive, taking control of the country in July under Paul Kagame.
