Transnistria War

from 2 November 1990 to 21 July 1992

The Transnistria War was an armed conflict between Moldova and the separatist region of Transnistria on the left bank of the Dniester, which had the support of Russia's 14th Army. Its roots lay in the late Soviet period, when Moldova's 1989 language law made Romanian the state language and Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking people in the east feared for their position. Transnistria proclaimed itself a republic in 1990, and clashes began at Dubăsari. Fighting escalated in the spring and summer of 1992, notably around the town of Bender, and several hundred people died. A ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia ended the war and established a peacekeeping force. Transnistria remains a de facto independent territory that no United Nations member state recognizes.
