Founding of IMDb

17 October 1990

IMDb, the Internet Movie Database, is an online database of information about films, television programmes, video games and the people who make them. It grew out of lists of film credits that fans exchanged in the Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.movies, and Col Needham, a British computer engineer, compiled them into a database in 1990. It moved to the web in 1993 as a site hosted at Cardiff University, and in 1998 it was acquired by Amazon. The site holds cast and crew listings, plot summaries, trivia and reviews, and its user ratings are used to compile lists such as the Top 250 films. Over time it became the standard reference for the entertainment industry, though much of its material is edited by users.
