German reunification

3 October 1990

German reunification was the process by which the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, joined the Federal Republic of Germany, or West Germany, in 1990. It followed the opening of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the peaceful revolution in the East, and was negotiated by Chancellor Helmut Kohl together with the East German government and the four Allied powers of the Second World War. Economic and monetary union took place in July 1990, and the political union became effective on 3 October 1990, now celebrated as the Day of German Unity. The Two Plus Four Treaty gave Germany full sovereignty and settled the final borders. Reunification brought large costs and lasting economic differences between East and West, but also established a larger and democratic Germany at the center of Europe.
