Russian Republic

from 1 September 1917 to 25 October 1917

The Russian Republic was the short-lived state proclaimed by the Russian Provisional Government in the autumn of 1917, after the overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II earlier that year. The declaration came as the government's leader, Alexander Kerensky, was trying to restore authority in the wake of General Lavr Kornilov's failed attempt to seize power. In practice it was a weak, unstable government, struggling with war with Germany, economic collapse, peasant unrest and growing support for the Bolsheviks. The republic was overthrown by the Bolsheviks in the October Revolution, when they stormed the Winter Palace. The planned Constituent Assembly met in January 1918 but was dissolved by the Bolsheviks after one day.
