Founding of Lions Clubs International

7 June 1917

Lions Clubs International is a service organization founded by Melvin Jones, a Chicago insurance salesman who persuaded business clubs to unite in a broader effort to serve their communities. Its motto is We Serve. In 1925 Helen Keller challenged the Lions at their convention to become knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness, and since then sight-related work has been central to its mission. The organization spread beyond the United States in the early 1920s, and today it has well over a million members in more than two hundred countries and territories. Its projects include eye care and screening, diabetes awareness, hunger relief and disaster aid.
