Launch of Forbes

15 September 1917

Forbes is an American business magazine that was launched in September 1917 by the Scottish-born financial journalist B. C. Forbes, who had worked for the Hearst newspapers. It covers business, finance, investing, technology and leadership, and its motto described it as a capitalist tool. The magazine is best known for its annual rankings, such as the Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans, first published in 1982, and the lists of billionaires, powerful women and top companies. It remained in the Forbes family for decades, and in 2014 a majority stake was sold to an investment group based in Hong Kong. Forbes has also developed a large online presence and a system that lets outside contributors publish on its website.
