On 22 January 1973, the US Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 in Roe v. Wade, in an opinion written by Justice Harry Blackmun, that the constitutional right to privacy included a woman's right to choose an abortion, striking down many state laws. The case had been brought by Norma McCorvey, using the pseudonym Jane Roe, in Texas. It divided American politics for fifty years. On 24 June 2022 the Court overturned it in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, returning the regulation of abortion to the states, many of which banned or restricted it.
