Grupo Televisa was formed in 1973 through the merger of two Mexican television companies, Telesistema Mexicano and Televisión Independiente de México. It was led by Emilio Azcárraga Milmo, whose father had built the earlier company. Over the following decades it became the largest media company in the Spanish-speaking world, with television networks, radio stations, magazines, cable and sports teams. It is known above all as a producer of telenovelas, which it sold in many countries, and it also held a share of the American network Univision. In 2022 its content business was merged with Univision to form TelevisaUnivision.
