Lyndon B. Johnson died on 22 January 1973 in LBJ Ranch House, aged 64. The 36th President of the United States, Johnson was a Texas Democrat who became an exceptionally skilled Senate majority leader before serving as vice president under John F. Kennedy. He took office after Kennedy's assassination in November 1963 and won a landslide election the following year. His Great Society programme produced the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Medicare, Medicaid and large investments in education and the fight against poverty. At the same time he deepened American involvement in the Vietnam War, which divided the country and led him to decline to seek re-election in 1968.
