Dmitry Medvedev was born on 14 September 1965 in Saint Petersburg. A Russian lawyer and politician, Medvedev rose through the circle of Vladimir Putin, whom he worked with in Saint Petersburg, and chaired the board of Gazprom. He served as president of Russia from 2008 to 2012 because Putin was barred by the constitution from a third consecutive term, and he appointed Putin prime minister. His presidency included the war with Georgia in 2008 and a modernization agenda that backed projects such as the Skolkovo technology hub.
